As Zimbabwe joins the world in commemorating Breast Cancer Awareness month this October, the Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council (ZNFPC) Mashonaland West Province has intensified its campaign to ensure no girl child is left behind. The fight against breast cancer must start with the girl child. Under the global theme “Every story is unique, every journey matters,” ZNFPC is saying breast cancer is no longer a disease of older women, with more young women and girls being diagnosed late due to lack of information and fear.
Breast cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women in Zimbabwe. For the girl child, knowledge is protection. ZNFPC Mashonaland West has deliberately shifted focus to young women and girls. ZNFPC believes that breast cancer is not just a health issue, it is a family issue. We cannot talk about Family Planning without talking about the health of the woman herself. Word of encouragement is to visit the nearest health facility for screening as early detection saves lives. It has been noted by Health officials that although breast cancer is uncommon in children, teenage girls who learn breast self-examination and adopt healthy lifestyles are more likely to detect changes early in adulthood.
Our campaign this year focuses to debunk myths that breast cancer is caused for instance, by witchcraft or other superstitious means and to reduce stigma. As highlighted before ZNFPC is offering free breast examinations throughout October 2026 as well as school and community outreaches in and around the Mashonaland West province whilst disseminating and distributing information education and communication materials and messages. Cases needing further management like ultra sound will be referred to relevant institutions and hospitals. It is our strong belief and conviction that male involvement is key hence we are encouraging men to support partners to get screened for Breast cancer. ZNFPC is implementing the campaign with support from the Ministry of Health and Child Care and other implementing agencies in the province. No woman in Mash West should die of a disease that can be treated if found early.
