Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council(ZNFPC)
is a Government of Zimbabwe parastatal, under the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MOHCC). Established by an Act of Parliament, formation of ZNFPC marked a heightened commitment by government to offer family planning services as part of primary health care services.
ZNFPC is mandated to coordinate, take leadership and support implementation of integrated Family Planning (FP) and Reproductive Health (RH) services in Zimbabwe. These include; provision of technical assistance to the FP programme, quality control for all public and private sector FP services, training of all health service providers in FP, demand creation materials (IEC) for FP and related SRH issues, conducting FP and related SRH researches, and procurement and distribution of contraceptives for the country.
Service delivery is through the following approaches: Community Based Distribution (CBD), Facility Based Provision at health facilities, Youth-friendly Adolescent and Youth Sexual Reproductive Health (ASRH), and Outreach services. The major family planning service providers are Ministry of Health and Child Care, City Health Departments, Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council (ZNFPC), Population Services Zimbabwe (PSZ), Population Solutions for Health (PSH) as well as Private Sector (Doctors, Hospitals, Clinics and Pharmacies).
Programming is guided by achieving Sustainable Development Goal of eradicating extreme poverty, promoting good health and well-being as well as to promote gender equality amongst communities. The programming takes inspiration from the national blueprint, the National Development Strategy (NDS2) (2026 – 2030). Key documents for the FP programme in Zimbabwe include; National Health Strategy (2026 – 2030), and National Family Planning Strategy (2022 – 2026), and Costed Implementation Plan.
The strategic vision of the organization is, Equitable access to sustainable, quality integrated sexual reproductive health and services through partnership and innovation for national development by 2030.
The mission statement of the organization is, To provide rights and choice based quality integrated sexual reproductive health and services through coordination and innovation
Goals
- Reduced unintended pregnancies among women of reproductive age.
- Indicator: Unmet need for family planning reduced from 10% in 2021 to 7% by 2026.
- Reduced adolescent pregnancies.
- Indicator: Adolescent fertility rate reduced from 108/1000 in 2019 to 93/1000 by 2026.
Objectives
- Increased utilization of modern contraceptives by adolescent boys, girls, women of reproductive age and men.
- Indicator: Modern Contraceptive Prevalence Rate (mCPR) for all women increased from 50.2% in 2019 to 54% by 2026
- Increased utilization of integrated FP, SRHR and HIV services for adolescents.
- Indicator: mCPR for adolescence (15-24 years) increased from 48% in 2015 to 54% by 2026.
The Strategy focuses on creating an enabling environment, improved commodity security, quality integrated service delivery, promotion of demand creation and effective monitoring and evaluation mechanisms. Cutting across these strategy areas are three key strategic priorities that will drive the family planning agenda forward: reducing teenage pregnancies, providing quality integrated family planning and reproductive health services and increasing utilization of contraception methods of choice.
ZNFPC clinics offer comprehensive quality integrated services on family planning and related reproductive health. The organization provides contraceptive products and services, education and counselling, breast and cervical cancer screening, prostate cancer services, fertility services, voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC), sexually transmitted infections screening and treatment, HIV Testing Services, Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PreP), Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP), initiation on Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) and referrals to health specialists. ZNFPC is a centre of excellence in FP Training, offering a range of family planning clinical courses and youth-friendly health programmes.
Through its Strategic Business Units, the organizations possesses an up-to-standard hotel services through its catering and accommodation facilities for all your workshops, conferences, corporate or family functions in a safe and secure environment. ZNFPC has a state-of-the-art Audio Visual Unit studios for all radio and television productions.
