The Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council’s 2024 Annual Report highlights the progress and strategic advancements in delivering family planning (FP) and sexual reproductive health (SRH) services in the country. During the period under review, the FP services coverage across all the 4 service delivery channels increased by 19% between 2023 and 2024 from 284,521 to 339,316. The increase demonstrates the organization’s dedication to expanding access and availability of FP services to all towards the reduction of unintended pregnancies among women of reproductive age and lowering the incidence of adolescent.

The modern contraceptive prevalence rate (mCPR) for all women increased from 48% in 2015 to 53% in 2024, indicating improved access to and uptake of contraceptive services. Teenage pregnancy has slightly increased from 22% (ZDHS 2015) to 23% (ZDHS 2023/24) while the adolescent fertility rate increased from 108 births per 1,000 adolescents to 111 births per 1,000 adolescents. Review of the ZNFPC Act: This was done to ensure the mandate of the organization aligns with emerging trends and developments in sexual reproductive health, enhancing the Council’s legal and policy framework to better respond to current and future SRH needs.
Successful Rollout of Sayana Press Self-Care Implementation: Introduced in 6 provinces, enhancing access and empowering users through self-administered contraceptive options.
Development of the Contraceptive Cost Recovery Framework: A major milestone aimed at increasing domestic financing and ensuring long-term program sustainability.
Training in Rights-Based Family Planning: Aimed at improving quality service provision. Service providers were equipped with skills to deliver client-centred, rights-based FP services.
Smart Advocacy with Parliamentarians: Strategic engagement facilitated high-level discussions on domestic financing for family planning, reinforcing political commitment.
Favourable Commodity Stock Status: Overall contraceptive availability remained strong throughout the year, with isolated stock-outs attributed mainly to logistical issues rather than supply shortages.
Despite challenges such as staff shortages, logistics, and financial constraints, ZNFPC showed resilience, innovation, and unwavering commitment to its mandate. Looking ahead, the Council reaffirms its dedication to delivering rights-based, quality, and integrated FP/SRH services.
