Abstinence is the choice to avoid engaging in sexual activity. For many adolescents, this decision can play an important role in helping them grow and develop in a healthy and responsible way. The teenage years are a time of change, where young people begin to understand themselves better and make decisions that can affect their future. Because of this, learning about abstinence and its benefits is very important. In addition to the physical benefits, abstinence also plays a critical role in protecting adolescents’ emotional well-being. Engaging in premature sexual activity can lead to emotional distress, anxiety and depression, which can have long-lasting impacts on mental health.
Abstinence also allows young people to focus on their education and future goals. School years are important for building knowledge, skills as well as ambitions. Early involvement in sexual relationships can sometimes become a distraction or lead to responsibilities that interrupt education. By practicing abstinence, adolescents are better able to concentrate on their studies and work towards their dreams and aspirations. In addition, making the decision to abstain can help build self-respect and confidence, as it shows the ability to make personal choices and resist pressure from others. It is important for adolescents to learn about abstinence both in schools and at home. In schools, teachers can provide clear and accurate information through lessons on health and life skills. These lessons can help students understand the benefits of abstinence and how to make good decisions. Guidance counselors can also support students by giving them a safe place to ask questions and talk about their concerns. Activities such as clubs and peer education programs can also encourage positive behavior and help students learn from one another.

Engaging adolescents and youths on self-control and assertiveness
Outside of school, parents and guardians play a very important role. When families talk openly about values, relationships and expectations, adolescents feel more comfortable seeking advice and making responsible decisions, that is Parent to Child Communication. Community groups and religious organizations can also support young people by offering guidance and positive role models. In addition, media such as radio, television, and social media platforms can be used to spread awareness and educate adolescents in ways that are easy for them to understand.
A real-life experience highlights how powerful abstinence education can be. During a Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) session conducted at a local school, the topic of abstinence was discussed openly. The session focused on self-respect, decision-making as well as understanding the consequences of choices. Among the learners was a quiet girl who seemed uncertain and withdrawn. For the purpose of this story, let’s call her Tariro. It later became clear that Tariro had been facing pressure from her peers to engage in a relationship she was not ready for. After the session, follow-ups were carried out to provide continued support. With guidance from teachers and the school’s counseling services, Tariro began to reflect on what she had learned. She started to understand that she had the right to make her own decisions and that saying no did not make her weak. Over time, a change became visible. She became more confident in expressing herself, more focused in class and more selective about the friends she surrounded herself with.
Months later, her teachers noticed an improvement not only in her academic performance but also in her overall behavior and attitude. She carried herself with confidence and was no longer easily influenced by peer pressure. The knowledge she gained about abstinence through the CSE sessions, along with the support she received, helped shape her into a more responsible and focused individual. In conclusion, abstinence is more than just avoiding sexual activity but it is about making informed choices, building self-respect as well as protecting one’s future. Through education, guidance and continuous support, adolescents can be empowered to make decisions that positively impact their lives. Real-life experiences show that when young people understand and embrace abstinence, they are better prepared to face challenges and build a brighter future for themselves.
