Menstrual Hygiene Day celebrated in Mabvuku community
Menstrual Hygiene Day is celebrated annually on the 28th May worldwide, to raise awareness, open discussions and highlight the importance of good menstrual health and hygiene management. This year the day is being celebrated under the global theme, ‘Making menstruation a normal fact of life by 2030’. It is possible to create a world where no woman or girl is held back because she menstruates. This means a world in which every woman and girl is empowered to manage her menstruation safely, hygienically, with confidence and without shame. If all efforts are put together;
- Everyone can access and afford the menstrual product of their choice
- Everyone has basic information about menstruation (this also includes boys and men)
- Period stigma is history.
To be able to scale our collective action to end period poverty and stigma by 2030, we need significantly more investment in menstrual health and hygiene NOW! Zimbabwe celebrated the day under a localized theme, ‘Action and Investment in Menstrual Hygiene and Health’. Various stakeholders participated in a community health expo, training adolescent girls and young people in reusable sanitary pad making in the Mabvuku Community reaching adolescents and youths with free services.
