Bulawayo Cancer Power Walk
On the 3rd of November 2018 Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council (ZNFPC) Matabeleland North commemorated Breast Cancer awareness in collaboration with Zim Papers, Tingamira and Corporate 24.
The event which was attended by over 200 people was held at Coghlan primary school grounds and it consisted of a lot of energetic and lively activities like a five (5) km cancer power walk and zumba dancing. People were in high spirits as they enjoyed the zumba dance, the aim was to educate people and spread more information on breast and cervical cancer as well as to encourage people to adopt healthy lifestyles and become more active in their daily lives as this can help to combat a lot of diseases.
ZNFPC provided services like IEC materials mainly on breast and cervical cancer, condom use and different family planning methods. We reached out to 25 young women, 10 adolescent girls and 9 males of reproductive age who were given services. Women in particular were very interested in finding out more information on the signs and symptoms of breast and cervical cancer and also knowing where they could access cancer screening services around Bulawayo. Lessons on how to do a self-examination for breast cancer were conducted.
People were also enlightened on the signs of both breast and cervical cancer and women were encouraged to not wait for signs and symptoms to appear but to go for screening at their nearest health facilities as early detection provides the best chance for effective treatment.
Corporate 24 also provided services like blood pressure checking and medical advice to people especially those who had concerns about their health and wellbeing.
